Sem ele, a nossa Terra seria inabitavelmente fria. A atmosfera cont\u00e9m atualmente mais de 400 ppm (partes por milh\u00e3o) deste elemento. A concentra\u00e7\u00e3o atmosf\u00e9rica era de cerca de 270 ppm antes das actividades industriais. Por exemplo, o di\u00f3xido de carbono absorve a luz numa gama de comprimentos de onda entre 2.000 e 15.000 nan\u00f3metros, que se sobrep\u00f5e ao espetro infravermelho. Quando o CO2 vibra, reemite a energia infravermelha em todas as direc\u00e7\u00f5es depois de a ter absorvido. O crescimento das emiss\u00f5es manteve-se comparativamente lento at\u00e9 meados do s\u00e9culo XX. Em 1950, o globo libertou 6 mil milh\u00f5es de toneladas de CO2. Esta quantidade quase quadruplicou at\u00e9 1990, atingindo um m\u00e1ximo de 22 mil milh\u00f5es de toneladas.
